Raimi won't direct the update, but he is teaming with Rob Tapert and "Dead" star Bruce Campbell to produce the project. The trio will bring in a new director to oversee the "Dead" remake.
The new "Dead" film will follow the "original formula," according to Joe Drake, president of "Evil Dead" financer Senator Intl. If this is true, then the remake will mimick the original's strict horror roots. The comedy found in "Dead" sequel "Army of Darkness" was not featured in the first film.
Variety makes no mention of Campbell appearing in the remake. The key characters in the original "Evil Dead" were all in their 20s, and while Bruce is still in fighting shape, he probably won't be a featured performer.
In related conjecture, the "Dead" announcement doesn't bode well for the "Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash" project, which Raimi halted last month. With a new "Dead" on the horizon, the Freddy-Jason-Ash showdown is now really, really dead. For now, at least. -- Mac Slocum
