Spielberg to Direct '72 Olympics Pic

The Hollywood Reporter says Steven Spielberg is ramping up production on an untitled film based on the tragic events of the 1972 Munich Olympics.

Spielberg shelved the project last year so it could be rewritten by "Angels in America" scribe Tony Kushner. With a few open months at his disposal, Spielberg reteamed with his "Minority Report" star Tom Cruise to film a little character study titled "War of the Worlds." It premieres June 29.

The Reporter says the Munich picture will begin filming this summer, with a proposed release date of Dec. 23. If it comes together as planned, Spielberg's Abraham Lincoln project will likely be pushed from a proposed January 2006 start date. Or maybe it won't; Spielberg has a habit of pumping out blockbusters on short deadlines. -- Mac Slocum
