The Smurfs Ride Again

Variety says a Smurfs animated feature is in the early stages of development. Paramount recently acquired film rights for the little blue icons, and the studio has designs on creating a trilogy of Smurfs CG films. This means the debut of "Smurfette in 3 Dimensions" is only a few short years away. It also ensures a boon to the long-dormant blue PVC industry.

Variety says Paramount aims to release the first film in 2008 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Smurfs.

If you're a Smurfs aficionado who's concerned about the viability of Smurfs in the digital age, take comfort from this prescient and calming comment from the Smurfs official site: "But how will the world of the Smurfs adapt to that of the 21st century? If the past is anything to go by, the answer must be: smurfingly!"
