On the Road Lives

An adaptation of Jack Kerouac's novel "On the Road" has been plucked out of development hell. The Hollywood Reporter says the project will be overseen by director Walter Salles ("The Motorcycle Diaries," "Dark Water"). Screenwriter Jose Rivera (also from "The Motorcycle Diaries") will adapt the book.

"On the Road" news has been sparse over the last few years. Back in 2001, reports linked Brad Pitt, Billy Cruddup and director Joel Schumacher to the project, but nothing developed.

Casting on this latest incarnation hasn't been announced, but MTV.com says production is expected to begin next year. We'll be monitoring future developments on our "On the Road" spotlight page. -- Mac Slocum
