Reuters has it that Paul Haggis is working on a rewrite of the next James Bond film, "Casino Royale." Haggis is seemingly rising to prominence solely based on his Oscar nominated script for "Million Dollar Baby," and for writing/directing the stealth hit "Crash."
Upon closer inspection, it appears that the 52 year old Haggis has paid his dues. He started out as a writer on such iconic TV shows as "Diff'rent Strokes," "The Facts of Life," and "The Love Boat." Following the path of other TV writers, he moved up the food chain to direct and produce a few episodes. Later, he took the producer role for entire series. He is credited with creating "Walker, Texas Ranger." Finally, he exploded on the big screen with these two aforementioned high visibility movies. Now, he is poised to take a leadership role in one of the world's premiere movie franchises. It took years of hard work, but if you don't look too carefully it looks like he is an overnight success.
Let that be a lesson to all you struggling screenwriters, one day you're writing dialog for Tootie, Blair, Willis and Mr. D. and 30 years later you're getting Oscar nods and contracts to write for Bond. -- Terrence Ryan
