Are You Ready For 6/6/06?

The OmenHe's baaack. Yes, folks, the cute little Damien has been reborn. This time it's to Julia Stiles and Liev Schreiber in the remake of "The Omen."

When I first heard about the new version of Richard Donner's 1976 tale of the Antichrist, I took it with my usual indignant remake-loathing grace. The original was such a perfectly creepy classic - right down to the spine chilling Latin chanting and demon rottweilers - I couldn't imagine how anyone would even consider remaking it.

I'm such a sucker for all things horror, though. I'll watch just about anything scary, gory, spooky or goopy and rationalize why it's worth my time (my money is a different story). Here's what I've come up with so far with this one: While Julia Stiles seems too young to play Damien's mom Katherine Thorn (played by Lee Remick in the original), I'm a fan of Liev Schreiber so I think he could probably pull off the role of the tortured father Robert Thorn (originally played by Gregory Peck). We've also got Mia Farrow returning to her horror roots and taking over as the nanny of the son of the devil. The original was also done 30 years ago without a lot of special effects. With today's big film budgets, this one has to have some serious computer generated scares, right?

After much ado, the new film opens tomorrow. Sure, a Tuesday is an odd day for an opening, but how often does the calendar so perfectly jive with a film's core symbology? 666 - sign of the devil. 6/6/06 - sign of "The Omen." Get it? Well, duh. Of course you do.

The real question - will you go see it?

Probably the best reason I can come up with to see it is the fact that if I don't, I'll be harder pressed to complain about it if it's bad. Having something to kvetch about is always worth the cash to me. I'm sure I could come up with something if I don't see it, but what fun is that? -- Shannon Nolley
