DiCaprio Tunes In For Timothy Leary Film

Leonardo DiCaprioAccording to The Hollywood Reporter, Leonardo DiCaprio and his production company is developing a biographical film based on the counterculture icon Timothy Leary.

Appian Way (DiCaprio's company) has tapped Obie-winning playwright Craig Lucas and Timothy Leary archivist Michael Horowitz to write the script. Of course, DiCaprio is first in line to star in the leading role.

Apparently, DiCaprio (who knew Leary before his death in 1996) has been looking to develop a film on the LSD advocate for several years. The movie will focus on Leary's life between his enrollment at West Point in the early 1940s and his escape from prison in 1970.

Lucas has penned such films as "The Secret Lives of Dentists" and "Prelude to a Kiss," which was adapted from a his play. Last year he made his directorial debut with the critically acclaimed indie film "The Dying Gaul."

No word on a potential release date or if DiCaprio is dropping tabs to prepare for the role. -- Shannon Nolley
