Disturbing news arrives from the Hollywood Reporter today: "Ace Ventura 3" is rolling into production.
By itself news of a third "Ace" film is innocuous, but consider this: the third film won't have Jim Carrey. Instead, the story will focus on Ace's son, who steps in for his higher-paid, wouldn't-do-this-if- his-life-depended-on-it father.
Now, supposing it's even possible to have an "Ace Ventura" movie without Carrey (highly unlikely, but let's give the producers the benefit of the doubt), why would anyone then ditch the one successful element left over from the two previous films? Why would they ever remove Ace Ventura from an Ace Ventura movie? It's a senseless act of ridiculousness.
Unfortunately, insane sequels have often drifted in Carrey's wake. "Dumb and Dumber" was crapped on by "Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd," "The Mask" now carries the stench of "Son of the Mask," and coming next year we'll see "Truman Show 2: Back on the Air."
Just kidding about that last one (I hope). -- Mac Slocum
