Fox Picks Up "Engineer" for Kutcher

Ashton KutcherAccording to Variety, Twentieth Century Fox has given the green light to "The Engineer," a film to be developed as a star vehicle for Ashton Kutcher.

Katalyst Productions (Kutcher's shingle with Jason Goldberg) developed the pitch with writer Mike Finch ("Adrenaline") over the past 10 months, using thrillers like "North by Northwest" and "Run Lola Run" as inspiration.

Fox also partnered with Katalyst for 2004's "The Butterfly Effect," which (not-so-surprisingly) also starred Kutcher.

Scripted by Finch, "Engineer" covers 24 frantic hours in the life of an American engineer in Tokyo after he's labeled a terrorist.

Kutcher will next be seen starring opposite Kevin Costner in "The Guardian," which opens Sept. 29. He also provides a lead voice for the animated film "Open Season" and will have a cameo in "Bobby," the Robert F. Kennedy film helmed by Emilio Estevez.

No word yet on a production schedule for "The Engineer." -- Shannon Nolley
