"Ghost Rider", Starring Nicolas Cage…Again

Nicolas Cage

So I just re-watched the teaser/trailer for Ghost Rider and I can now tell you with absolute certainty that I have no idea how I feel about this movie.

On the one hand, as a fan of the books, I have to say that the prospect of seeing that flaming skull on the big screen is more than a little exciting. On the other hand I can’t help but think there’s a huge potential for Mr. Blaze’s alter ego to look like a Grateful Dead video reject. On the other hand, (yes I have three hands; don’t stare) there’s always Eva Mendes. Oh Eva…ahem, I digress.

Of course the real star of the movie is Nicolas Cage. That’s right, Captain Corelli is Johnny Blaze. Call me crazy but I’m just not getting that stunt-motorcyclist-sold-my-soul-to-the-devil-turned-hell-blazing-vigilante vibe. I mean ten years ago the dude was Guarding Tess.

Granted, Cage is a self admitted comic geek (he did name his kid Kal-el after all) but so is Kevin Smith (who named his kid Harley); and I don’t see him being cast him as Silver Surfer (although that would be hilarious). I suppose my biggest problem with NC being cast in this movie is the fact that I feel like NC is being cast in every movie. Does it feel like that to anyone else?

Realistically, in the last six years he’s been in about the same number of films as a Sam Jackson or George Clooney; bur for whatever reason I’m on Nicolas Cage overload. Maybe it’s the fact that his films tend to be released in waves.

For example, last year Lord of War came out September 16th followed about thirty-five days later by The Weather Man. Then we had eight months off. Then The Ant Bully comes out on July 28th, 2006 followed just twelve days later by World Trade Center, which is then followed twenty-three days later by The Wicker Man. That’s three Cage movies in 35 days. I don’t even see my parents with that kind of consistency.

I can tell you that the next two years are going to get worse too. In addition to Ghost Rider, we’re going to get three more NC flicks in 2007 including National Treasure 2. Then in 2008, yes 2008, we’re going to get another four including a boxing movie with Curtis “50 cent” Jackson. That’s eight movies in two years. Does this guy even sleep? Maybe he’s going after the world record for most film appearances.

Whatever the reason, I guess the only thing to do now is grab a vat-o-popcorn, a gallon of Mr. Pibb and a super-jumbo box of Sour Patch Kids (remember, three hands) grab a seat and let the waves of Nicolas Cage lap over me. Which reminds me, I should probably call my parents.
