Brad Pitt and the Tower of "Babel"
“In the beginning, all the Lord’s people from all parts of the world spoke one language. Nothing they proposed was impossible for them. But fearing what the spirit of man could accomplish the Lord said let us go down and confuse their language so that they may not understand one another’s speech.â€Intrigued?
Yea, me either, but we’ll get to that in a minute.
Obviously the primary role of a movie trailer is to generate interest in the film it’s promoting so that when the movie is released, the movie-going masses will flock to the theaters in droves eager to hand over their ten dollars to see it. This is not a revelation.
However, after my thirteenth viewing (i've got spare time) of the trailer for “Babel†I feel exactly the same way I felt the first time I watched it; kinda bitter. It’s weird actually because clearly the trailer wants me to feel something, I’m just not sure that bitter was what they were going for.
I guess what really bothers me about it is that it’s trying too hard to show me how “important†this movie is. For the first time in quite a while I really feel like I’m being “sold†a movie, like it’s somehow my responsibility to see it because of the current world political climate or whatever. Frankly, I just don’t think I care enough.
I mean if we were to take a look at this logically (out of character for me I know) and dissect this trailer, I’m sure we would find all the “required†components of a successful dramatic tease. Why then, does this particular trailer fail? Perhaps in performing this exercise I’ll be able to figure out the source of my bitterness (besides not getting hugged enough as a child of course).
Element 1 – Dramatic Music
I have to say, the score to this trailer is actually pretty cool. It does a decent job of creating a sort of frantic pace to what is otherwise pretty slow moving action. The almost tribal sounding, ticking time bomb-ish taps and booms give credence to the uncertainty and confusion that the trailer is trying to convey.
Element 2 – Ominous Voice Over
On the one hand, I applaud the trailer making folks for not going with the standard-turned-cliché, Don LaFontaine, to handle the voice over duties. On the other hand, the fact that whenever we hear the voice he’s paraphrasing Bible scripture (see above) rates high on my “pretentiousness-o-meterâ€.
Element 3 – Marquis Names
Although it appears as though they make up only 1/4 of the actually story in “Babelâ€, Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett easily occupy 3/4 of the trailer. There’s no secret as to why that is but I think it works against the films’ allegedly “indie†credibility.
Also getting billing in the film is relative unknown Gael Garcia Bernal (“Y tu mama tambienâ€, “The Science of Sleepâ€). With the recent media buzz surrounding this guy you’d think he was the second coming of Brando or something. If there’s one thing I hate more than being told what movie to see, it’s being told what actor I’m supposed to respect. I’ll form my own opinion thank you.
And speaking of forming my own opinions Clifton Collins Jr. is in the movie as a cop. He's cool.
Element 4 – Rapid jump cuts
A movie trailer staple since the beginning of time, using jump cuts allows the viewer to not really know what’s going on while at the same time get a very general understanding of the plot. The problem I have here is that I feel as though the whole movie is going to be like that.
If you’re not familiar with the work of Director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (“Amores Perrosâ€, “21 Gramsâ€) the collage-like narrative /music video jump cut/everything and everyone is connected style of storytelling is his stock and trade and kind of played out (That being said, Mr. Inarritu did win Best Director for this film at Cannes this year so what the hell do I know).
In my opinion “Pulp Fiction†did it best, Guy Richie uses it well, and “Crash†cashed in on it. Everything else falls under the trying to hard to be artistic category.
Element 5 – Plot and Title
As far as I can tell from the trailer (the official movie site is of little help) the premise of the movie centers around the difficulty and frustration “we all feel†with our inability to communicate with those around us. Snore.
And if you don’t get that from what you see and hear, the title of the film is there to gently bludgeon you with the concept. It’s Babel get it? Like from the Bible. Double snore.
So what have we learned here today (other than the fact that I clearly having issues)? Well for starters, all the necessary parts does not a good trailer make. Just because everything seems to be in order, doesn’t mean it works. Secondly, without making a direct comparison to “Crash†which “tackled†the topic of racism, “Babel†will attempt to “make us think†about our world and the importance of communicating with one another if we are to survive.
In other words, it’ll be a pretentious, wholly predictable, uninspired retread. Of course, I could be way off. It was nominated for the Golden Palm at Cannes and this is “Trailer Trash†after all.
Bottom line, I'm just a bitter, bitter man and I need a hug.

I know who Gael Garcia Bernal is. I know you know who Gael Garcia Bernal is. That's why i wrote "relative unknown". In my opinion, John & Jane Q. Moviegoer probably doesn't know that he is one of the most well known actors in Mexico. And i never said I didn't respect him. My comment was that I don't need to be told whom to respect.
2)
Obviously this article is drivel. I'm writing an opinion piece on a movie that hasn't even been released yet. That's the whole theme of the "Trailer Trash" column.
I encourage you to read my past drivel as well. I'm sure you'll find it all equally as foolish.

So you feel that the trailer of the movie is screaming at you "please see me"? Does every movie trailer have that effect on you or just because the spesific movie is a bid to complecated and you are to stupid to understand it?As you have to know every freaking trailer is made to "sell" a movie.That's how the movie idustry works.But as far as the movie have something meaningful to give me I will go and see it.If that dosen't work for you just don't go.Pure and simple.And next time please try to find something better to do with your time than overanalyzing a film trailer.

As I explained to Dana and Robin above, my "overanalyzing a film trailer" is exactly what "Trailer Trash" is about. That's what I do.
You see, I figure there's enough a-holes out there that give their opinions after the movie comes out (no offense Orndorf) that I might as well be the a-hole the give his opinion before hand.
Secondly, if you go back and reread the post (you won't do it) you'll see that the first paragraph clearly explains "your" point.
What I was trying to get across (unsuccessfully it would seem) is that this PARTICULAR trailer (and movie) seems so self-important that I'm being "sold" more than just a reason to chomp down on some Sour Patch Kids.
And as far as me "finding something better to do with my time" I'll say only this...This IS what I do with my time. What's your excuse?
btw, it's "complicated" not "complecated" (irony, party of one your table is ready)

you are performing a noble service for the betterment of human culture and the future rankings of our meager star cluster among the gathered clouds of dust along the great spiral arm.
Trailer Trash will live right up there with the Dead Sea Scrolls and Bill O'Reilly's Most Ridiculous Items of The Day as pivotal contributions to the enlightenment of man.
Where else can we decide if we are going to enjoy something before we actually may or may not and then reflect upon that possible experience in comparisons with other potential viewings of films that may or may not be properly represented by edited clips designed to get us to see them in the first place?
As Grouch Marx said: "If she figures that one out, she's good!"

Gael Garcia Bernal is not a "unknown actor" he is the most well-known actor in Mexico and one of the most famous actors in spanish language films. You don't have to like him but he deserves as much respect as the other actors in the film. (If fame is the way to earn it)
