Chipmunks to Sing Again

This last holiday season, I heard "Christmas Don't Be Late" on the radio, for what must have been the first time in years. It really cracked me up, but only for the first chorus. I had a bunch of those "Alvin and the Chipmunks" albums while I was growing up, and listened to them incessantly. Now, as a 40-something, I realize why my poor mother kept trying to hide those records in the basement.

Almost a half-century after their initial creation by struggling songwriter Ross Bagdasarian (a.k.a. David Seville), the Chipmunks just might be making their way to a multiplex near you. Director Tim Hill is in talks to direct a film which would star goofy Simon, brainy Theodore, and that rascal Alvin as computer generated images. The search for a real-world star for the role of David Seville is underway.

Hill is the director of Garfield: a Tale of Two Kitties and Muppets from Space; he's a credited writer for The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, as well as several episodes of the television show. So, what I'm saying is, he's got the chops.

The Chipmunks first burst on the scene as uncredited "backup singers" for David Seville's 1958 novelty hit "Witch Doctor." The Christmas-themed "The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late") followed later that same year. Several albums (called "long-playing records" back in those days) followed, as did a couple of different television shows. The Chipmunks have been the subject of a few direct-to-video releases of late; their first and only other foray onto the big screen was the 1987 extravaganza The Chipmunk Adventure.

This latest effort is being spearheaded by Ross Bagdasarian Jr. and his wife, Janice Karman, who will act as producers on the film.
