Crowe Hired as Sheriff of "Nottingham"

He's been a boxer, a gladiator, and a thrower of telephones. Now Russell Crowe will be taking on Robin Hood in a hotly shopped property, "Nottingham." He's set to portray the Sheriff in what is being billed as a "revisionist version" of the familiar Robin Hood legend. (Sure you want to do that, Russell? I mean, the media seems to love to vilify you, and here you go, playing the nemesis of a beloved folk hero who steals from the rich and gives to the poor. Well, all right...)

Universal Pictures won in a bidding war that also included New Line, Warner Bros., and Sony as players.. The project will be produced by Brian Grazer for Imagine Entertainment. While Crowe will reportedly take home a $20 million check for being the Sheriff, screenwriters Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris will only will receive "seven figures" for their work on the script. I assume that means seven action figures based on characters from the eventual finished film, and take it as further proof that you just can't make money writing in Hollywood these days.

No word yet on who will portray Robin of Hood. My vote goes to Tommy Lee Jones. A director for the project is also yet to be named.
