Writers Guild 2007 Award Winners Announced

Now, why is it that everybody pays attention to the Director's Guild, but the Writers Guild of America gets so little press? I swear, Hollywood seems to forget that the better ideas come from people who sit down and actually write something.... Gawd forbid, movies should come from thinking people rather than bean-grubbing hucksters... (you think I'm kidding? They're talking about a sequel to "National Treasure"...) But I digress.

In a doomed attempt to compete with the Police reunion over at the Grammy Award ceremonies, the WGA last night (Sunday, Feb 11) presented their awards in a bi-coastal fashion, from both the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles and the Hudson Theatre in New York City. The WGA recognizes outstanding achievement in writing for screen, television and radio. From the Writers Guild website, here are the announced winners for film:

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY: "Little Miss Sunshine" - Michael Arndt

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY: "The Departed" - William Monahan (based on the motion picture "Infernal Affairs" originally written by Alan Mak and Felix Chong)

DOCUMENTARY SCREENPLAY: "Deliver Us from Evil" - Amy Berg

I guess you've never heard the old joke about the dumb blonde who goes to Hollywood and decides she'll advance her career by sleeping with a writer?
