Clooney Acts, Directs, in "Leatherheads"

Coming Soon reports that principal photography has begun on "Leatherheads," marking a third trip to the director's chair for George Clooney, who also stars. Shooting is currently underway in the Carolinas, with an expected release date of this fall.

"Leatherheads" is to be a romantic comedy (hence the presence of Renee Zellweger in the cast) concerning pre-NFL league football in the 1920s. Clooney plays the team coach, Dodge Connelly, who recruits a former college star-turned-war hero named Carter Rutherford (played by John Krasinski from The Office) in order to drum up interest in the struggling franchise. Zellweger plays Lexi, a reporter who digs into Rutherford's past, believing his tales of derring-do on the battlefield are too remarkable to be believed--all the while trying to fend off the advances of Dodge, who wants both his team to succeed, and to get the girl in the end. How will he fare?--well, I'll give you a hint: he's George flippin' Clooney.

Clooney is again teaming with several folks who've helped make his past projects successful--most notably Steven Soderbergh giving a boost in the script department. Grant Heslov--who shares a "Good Night, And Good Luck." writing credit--will be one of the producers, and Stephen Mirrione will again helm the editing desk, as he has for several of Clooney's latest projects.

Surely they could have found somebody - ANYbody - else to play the "girl" in this movie? Gah.
