"Planet One" on the rise for Handmade Films

Handmade Films International, the British production company that came into prominence by distributing Monty Python-related projects, will partner with Iloin Animation Studios for a CGI project, "Planet One."

The project has a proposed $50 million budget, and is to be directed by Jorge Blanco and scripted by Joe Stillman, the man behind many of the gags in the "Shrek" movies. Production will begin in May, with an eye toward either a late 2008 or early 2009 release.

In what sounds like a recasting of an old Ray Bradbury story that I can't quite remember the name of, "Planet One" is about a world at once strange (the citizens have eight fingers and wobbly antennae) and familiar (the locale is eerily similar to Wally-and-the-Beaver 1950s-era suburbia)--and overrun with paranoia about alien invasion. Eventually such an alien does land--a human astronaut.

So will this be a feel-good kiddie movie or a reverse-engineered "Mars Attacks"? Only time will tell...
