Costar says Hathaway is "Brilliant" as Austen

Following a successful string of movies made from Jane Austen's books, now comes a film about Austen herself. "Becoming Jane" is due for release on the third of August. And, apparently like the dust-up over Renee Zellweger being cast as Bridget Jones, Anne Hathaway has come under fire for being cast as Austen.

Her costar James McAvoy has come to her defense, saying directors and producers must "find the actor, not the accent" for movie roles, going on to call Hathaway "undoubtedly brilliant" in the role.

He goes on to rightly point out a certain bit of hypocrisy in the seemingly fashionable parlor game of complaining about Americans portraying the English. No-one seems to mind that an actual Ugandan did not portray Idi Amin in "The Last King of Scotland," after all. And wasn't that Sir Anthony Hopkins as Nixon? Hmmm.

Having seen Becoming Jane, Anne has risen to the challange, her accent is word perfect, and there is real chemistry between Anne and James, pity James did not perfect his Irish accent. Unfortunatly there is a lot that could have been done better, firstly filming this in Ireland in winter, when it is set in the summer, was a bad move, and makes the whole film very dark, adding nothing to a script that lacks the fire one might have expected. The whole cast do a great job with what they were given, but on the whole well worth watching. Those who complain about an American being given this roll should eat there words, as Anne certainly steals the film, and shows just what a very tallented actress she has become. I feel certain that the pure Jane Austen fans will have a lot to say, but as there is very little known it had to be filled out, which has been done quite well, and of course the ending is not what Jane would have written, but this is supposed to be real life not fiction.
