Fox Slates Shyamalan Project

Fox has greenlit the next project for M. Night Shyamalan, a thriller (and a potentially R-rated one) entitled "The Happening." The deal was made over a spec script Shyamalan wrote last summer--filming will begin later this summer in Philadelphia, with an eye towards a summer 2008 release. Details of the story aren't totally clear (Variety mumbled something about "a family on the run from a natural crisis that presents a large-scale threat to humanity," but knowing Shyamalan, such a description is practically a red herring) but it is reported to be an apocalyptic thriller. Has Shyamalan made anything but thrillers?

Oh, right, "Lady in the Water."

Shyamalan will continue to work on a couple of other scripts, even as he assumes the director's chair for this new project. He is attached as screenwriter to both "Avatar" and "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe." (Feel free to see a connection between those two projects.)
