Today's Variety contains a squib about how Warner Brothers has decided to bump up the release date of "Speed Racer." This was to have been Warner's "tentpole" picture to kick-start next year's summer season, and the strategy was to open wide on May 23--Memorial Day Weekend.
But the dates, they are a-changin'. The new effort from the Wachowski Brothers (Larry and Andy) will now open two weeks earlier, on May 9, 2008.
A distribution guru named Dan Fellman utters something about how this move will give the film "maximum playability throughout the rest of the season". There's also a mention that internationally the new date will not interfere with the European Soccer Championships. [Insert canned laughter here.]
Everybody who's been paying attention knows the real reason for this shift. Because come Memorial Day weekend next year, it'll be "No time for love, Speed Racer," when the next Indiana Jones movie blows into your friendly neighborhood multiplex, crushing all in its path.
Why can't they just come out and say it?
