Green Hornet Buzzing at Columbia

Sure, Hollywood has been bouncing around the concept for years, but Columbia is making a little noise about recently acquiring the rights to the Green Hornet property.

Originally a radio show show character dating back to the 1930s, the Green Hornet has been the subject of film and comic adaptation, but is probably best known from the 1960s television show that also introduced Bruce Lee (as Kato) into popular culture. The Green Hornet is the alias of newspaper publisher Britt Reid, who takes to wearing a mask and fighting crime at night (this character undeniably inspired Bob Kane's Batman, who premiered three years later).

The production company belonging to Neal Moritz is attached to the project. While it could be argued that Moritz knows something about franchise building, based on his acumen, to the astute observer, this doesn't necessarily bode well for the project--Moritz is named as producer on such braindead films as "Stealth" and the direct-to-video "I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer." Still, because I like to hold out a little hope (and because I want to believe someone will finally make a good film out of Richard Matheson's classic "I Am Legend"), I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, for now. Maybe he'll get a clue and hire Michael Chabon to come up with the screen story.

What? Next thing you know, we'll be talking about a Plastic Man movie...
