"Grindhouse" to Split?
There's been much discussion over the last couple days as to the under-performance of the Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez double-bill "Grindhouse." Most estimates had the film with an expected opening of around $30 million, based on previous performances by films from the two auteur directors; the film instead came in fourth place, with just over an $11 million take.Was it the Easter weekend (when lighter/family fare generally performs better)? Was it the 3-hour running time? Was it that no-one other than Tarantino or Rodriguez loves hardcore camp? Or are audiences simply brain dead these days, preferring rehashed sports comedies to anything daring or different? No one knows for sure. Certainly the film was a high-profile release (The Weinstein Company spent over $30 million on marketing alone--more than half the feature's full budget). Reviews were almost uniformly positive. But audiences simply weren't there for the movie in big numbers--that's the only sure thing.
Plans are already in place to split the films for European release, where (according to the strategy) the notion of the "double feature" is less common. (If you want to make the argument for Europe and other markets, however, you might as well make it for the US as well. The "double feature" hasn't been a very damn common theater phenomenon since, well, since the days of the grindhouse, really.) Those plans may now migrate to the United States for an impromptu re-release campaign. Which means that in a couple weeks from now, you will have to pay twice to see what you can, this week, pay once to see. Harvey Weinstein himself is championing this idea, which would mean padding each film with some additional footage. "We'll be adding those 'two missing reels' that's talked about in the movie," he's quoted as saying.
Ug. This would ruin both films. The entire notion of the "missing reel" gives punch to both storylines (and provides, in both cases, a fantastic joke on the nature of film narrative).
A smarter move would be to cut each ''feature" by ten to fifteen minutes and re-release the film with a more snappy running time of 2.5 hours, or even less. Since plans are already in place to domestically release the films as separate DVDs later this year, it only makes sense to keep the theater experience of "Grindhouse" a special one.
Since I'm sure Weinstein isn't reading this, here's my advice to you: Go see "Grindhouse" while you still can. Before TWC ruins it like Universal International ruined "Touch of Evil."

Ah, but that conversation contains very important information, an explanation for why one of the characters is later able to survive...
From what I read, the original intention was for each film to be 70-75 minutes long; they each clock in at around 85 minutes, currently. Cutting the films down to that amount of time (and it's possible in both cases) retains the original context, upon which both of those features hinge. And then, the early viewers will have seen something later viewers can not--adding a little mystique to the release. Save the splitting for the padded DVDs, I say.

They should not have been surprised that these films were not going to do well. Mainstream audiences will not understand what the boys are trying to do...

I think they created a very niche product then were stunned when mainstream audiences didn't show up in droves. I've heard the "Easter Weekend" argument, but "300" which has been out for weeks STILL managed to make over $8MM over the same weekend.
Three hours for this type of film is too long IMHO. And personally I wish the "missing reel" from "Death Proof" was the entire conversation in the restaurant with the second set of women instead of the lap dance.
