Hanks to Reprise Role as "Code" Breaker?

Plans for a sequel to the "The Da Vinci Code" began taking shape even before that film was released to theaters a year ago last spring. And why not?--based on one of the biggest bestsellers of all time, the movie was certainly a success at the box office, grossing over $200 million, despite Tom Hanks's creepy hair.

And that was the biggest question--while story elements were not in doubt, no one knew whether or not Hanks would return in the lead role. Well, reports are coming now that he is "locked up" for the sequel, "Angels and Demons," which will be based on the earlier Langdon adventure penned by Dan Brown in 2000. Avika Goldsman has been working on the screenplay for the past year; no word yet on whether director Ron Howard will return to the director's seat.

Personally, I'm kinda looking forward to this one. "Angels and Demons"--which deals with an evil pope rising to power in the Catholic Church, and an Illuminati attempt to destroy the Vatican with an anti-matter bomb--is hands down one of the dumbest, worst-written books I've ever read. And trust me, I love pulp fiction, so that's a real achievement. After seeing Grindhouse, I have to say: don't give it to Ron Howard--let Tarantino and Rodriquez bring that turkey to the screen. They'll do it right.

So, is Da Vinci Code II about a big Moravian divorce scandal (a la Henry VIII), and how Mary and Jesus got excommunicated from the church before the church even got started based on the crucifiction and resuurection of a man who was never crucified and never rose from the dead? That's going to be cornfusing. I hope you get Cliffs Notes with your 3-D glasses...Oh, and Tom Hanks SUCKS.
