Stiles as Plath in "Bell Jar"

Julia Stiles has just inked a deal to produce and star in a new adaptation of poet Sylvia Plath's largely autobiographical work "The Bell Jar." Production will be shared by Plum Pictures and, in a certain amount of grotesque irony, an outfit called Killer Films.

Plath is these days as equally well known for her suicide as she is her poetry, and the story and themes of "The Bell Jar," detailing a young, professional woman's decent into depression and madness, is often reviewed in light of her death. The book was once before brought to the screen, in a 1979 adaptation starring Marilyn Hassett. A more recent film, Sylvia, starring Gwyneth Paltrow, detailed her relationship with fellow poet Ted Hughes.

Stiles and her agents have spent the last couple years trying to option the material away from StudioCanal, and were at last successful--I suppose this project is dear to her heart. Principal photography should begin early in 2008 with a likely release during the first part of 2009 (with, maybe, some early screenings just to get that Oscar eligibility).
