Bruno is #1 at the box office, but for how long?

Bruno, the latest mockumentary from Borat star Sacha Baren Cohen opened to a very successful $30.4 million, but most of that came on its opening day, which drew in over $14 million alone. That followed with a 39% decline on Saturday to a modest $8.8 million.

While it did beat Borat in terms of opening weekends, Bruno was released in almost 2,000 more theaters than Borat. It's next weekend that will determine whether or not Bruno can match its predecessor's $129 million domestic run.

"It's great to be No. 1 in the marketplace," Universal distribution president Nikki Rocco said. "And the company is extremely excited about its global performance."

MRC co-chairman Modi Wiczyk said he is unsure about Bruno's staying power throughout the coming weeks. "I don't know, but it's got a rabid fan base and is starting off terrifically," Wiczyk said.

A $30 million is never a bad thing, but with Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince opening this week, the success of Bruno could come down to good word-of-mouth and repeated viewings for its targeted audience. For now, Cohen can enjoy great success with another gutsy and risky performance.
