Mulder, Scully Ride Into Alien Sunset

Variety reports that "The X-files" will end with a two-part episode this May after nine seasons on Fox. Declining ratings and mounting production costs (reported to be $4 million per episode) were given as reasons for the decision, but buried amidst the end-of-the-road crap is the truth: The show lost its legs when David Duchovny decided to leave.

While it's sad to see this milestone show depart—especially for a dedicated contingent—the cancellation opens the door to a sequel to the 1998 feature film. Duchovny and Gillian Anderson have both expressed an interest in returning for a movie, so while the show may be fading into the television twilight, the big screen could offer rejuvenation for the characters and conspiracies that have wormed their way into our pop culture hearts.
