"Children of Men" Begins Production

Clive OwenProduction began last week on Universal Pictures' "The Children of Men," the sci-fi thriller movie based on P.D. James' best-selling novel, according to SciFi Wire.

The film will be directed by Alfonso Cuaron, who is best known for his work on 2004's "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" and 2001's "Y tu mama tambien." Cuaron adapted the "Children" screenplay from the novel with Timothy J. Sexton and David Arata.

Among the movie's cast members are veteran actors Clive Owen, Julianne Moore and Michael Caine.

Clive Owen earned an Academy Award nomination for his role in "Closer." He followed that success with the blockbuster Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller film, "Sin City." Owen also stars in "Derailed," co-starring Jennifer Aniston, currently in theaters.

According to IMDB, "Children of Men" is set in 2027 where humankind has fallen into anarchy following a human infertility defect that promises its extinction. Theo, played by Owen, is a disillusioned government agent who becomes the world's last hope in protecting a "miraculously" pregnant woman and transporting her to a sanctuary at sea where scientists can use the child's birth to save humanity.

P. D. James is the author of nineteen books, most of which have been filmed and broadcast on television in the United States and other countries.
