Sherlock Holmes Goes Digital

SherlockIn 2006, as part of its Community Reading Project's Discovering Sherlock Holmes program, Stanford University will be rereleasing a collection of Arthur Conan Doyle's tales of Sherlock Holmes, just as they were originally printed and illustrated in "The Strand Magazine."

The Sherlock Holmes project is the fourth in a series of reissued works, which began with three Dickens novels: "Great Expectations" in 2003, "A Tale of Two Cities" in 2004, and "Hard Times" in 2005. (Still available on the website.)

From January through April 2006, Stanford will be republishing - free of charge - two early Holmes stories, "A Scandal in Bohemia" and "The Speckled Band"; the nine-part novel, "The Hound of the Baskervilles"; and the famous "last" encounter between Holmes and Moriarty, "The Final Problem."

Stanford is offering the free service in two forms. After signing up on the University's website, readers can receive copies of the original magazine releases as paper facsimiles or can download the facsimile as a PDF from the website. Each installment will be available on successive Fridays. (If you chose PDF files, you will receive an email every Friday alerting you to the week's issue available for download.)

Copies will be made available starting January 27th. Subscribers will receive one issue per week for fifteen weeks. For those unfamiliar with the Sherlock Holmes stories, this is a great way to get to know the original Gil Grissom. -- Shannon Nolley
