"Futurama" To Be Thawed Out?

Futurama Good news, everyone! According to Variety, talks have begun at 20th Century Fox TV to revive the animated series, much in the same way "Family Guy" found new life after its cancellation.

The studio is in early discussions to put "Futurama" back in production and create a limited number of episodes. No word yet on where those episodes might end up. Studio reps are currently declining comment.

"Futurama," which premiered in March of 1999, aired its final original episode on Fox in August 2003. Since then, the series has found new life - and fans - through DVD releases and repeatedly high-rated airings on the Cartoon Network.

The series was created by Matt Groening (creator of "The Simpsons") and David X. Cohen. The story revolved around Fry, a pizza delivery boy who was accidentally frozen for 1,000 years. He wakes up in the year 3000 and befriends cyclops Leela and cranky robot Bender -- all of whom work for the intergalactic delivery service run by Fry's distantly descended nephew, Prof. Farnsworth.

Before "Futurama" can rematerialize, however, the studio must first secure deals with the show's production team, as well as voice stars including Billy West (Fry), Katey Sagal (Leela) and John DiMaggio (Bender).

This reprieve offers some hope for fans of well written - and funny - animated shows. Now if only they'll bring back "Clone High" and "Invader Zim," we'll be all set. (No, I'm not going to hold my breath.) -- Shannon Nolley
