Variety is reporting that "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" knocked the big ape off its pedestal.
Disney's "The Chronicles of Narnia" took the number one slot for the first time since the debut of Universal's "King Kong." The win is attributed to the high family attendance over the long weekend.
With many parents and kids off on Friday and Monday, an increased number of families were able to attend matinees. Films geared to a family friendly audience such as "Narnia," "Cheaper by the Dozen 2" and "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" saw their grosses rise significantly this weekend.
The fantasy epic "Narnia" grossed $32.8 million over four days. It's total gross is an impressive $224.8 million domestically with another $156.7 million overseas for a worldwide total of $381.5 million.
"Kong" was just behind the lion with $31.6 million in four days. Thanks to good international sales, the total gross for "Kong" is slightly higher than "Narnia" at $396.8 million. It has grossed $174.3 million domestically with $222.5 million overseas.
Still in the top ten, "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" took No. 9 after seven weeks, grossing $7.5 million. It's domestic total has reached $276.9 million, giving it a shot at becoming the only 2005 movie to reach $300 million-plus domestically besides "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith." That is, of course, unless "Narnia" can keep bringing in the kiddies. -- Shannon Nolley
