"Smallville" Star Nets "Butterfly Effect 2" Role

Durance Moviehole is reporting that the sexy "Smallville" starlet is stretching her wings to make New Line's sequel to "The Butterfly Effect."

Erica Durance, who plays the ever-so-spunky Lois Lane on the WB series, will play the lead female role in the new film.

According to another actress who auditioned for the role, "Casting agents Coreen Mayrs and Heike Brandstatter saw several actresses for the role of Julie in the film, but ultimately went with Durance for the main female role. [T]he production is looking for the biggest names they can get. She has the pull with the Smallville fans so I'm not surprised [she got it over me]. I imagine they'll get a reasonable sort of name for the lead male too. Durance, as far as I could tell, was one of the most familiar faces who tested - the rest were essentially unknowns. I love her though - she'll do a good job. It's a juicy part - and nothing to do with the first film."

Durance and a to-be-announced male lead will be required on the film's Vancouver set to begin filming next week.

While details on the movie's story are scarce, Bloody-Disgusting reports that "The Butterfly Effect 2" will follow a new character who, like Ashton Kutcher in the first, finds he can travel through time. As he changes past events, though, they have unexpected consequences in the present.

The film is directed by John Leonetti who served as director of photography on "Star Trek : Insurrection" and cinematographer on "The Scorpion King" and the upcoming Wan/Whannell release "Silence."

New Line indicated that "Butterfly Effect 2" will likely be released straight to DVD later this year. -- Shannon Nolley
