James Cromwell Joins Cast of "Spider-Man 3"

James Cromwell

According to the Hollywood Reporter, James Cromwell has been tapped to walk the beat in Columbia Pictures' "Spider-Man 3" as Captain Stacy, the father of Bryce Dallas Howard's character, Gwen Stacy.

Sam Raimi is helming this third installment to the "Spider-Man" film series.

In the "Amazing Spider-Man" comic books, Stacy dies a heroic death as he saves a child during a battle between Spider-Man and another supervillain. Peter Parker love interest Gwen Stacy ends up blaming Spider-Man for her father's death. (Sounds like the Green Goblin/Norman Osborn and Harry Osborn scenario from the first film. Thoughts from the comic book fans?)

Cromwell joins returning cast members Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and James Franco. Topher Grace, Thomas Haden Church and Theresa Russell have also recently joined the cast.

Cromwell is best known for starring in the "Babe" movies, the first of which earned him an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor. He's no stranger to sci-fi fans, though. He's also appeared on TV's "'Salem's Lot," "Enterprise," "The Green Mile," "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," and in the film "Star Trek: First Contact." His recent role on the innovative HBO series "Six Feet Under" earned him an Emmy mention in 2003.

I wonder who they'll announce as a cast member next week. These press releases have been so slow in coming we have to wonder when they'll finally fill all the roles. Hopefully before the movie hits theaters. --Shannon Nolley
