Universal Set For "Red Star" Mission

The Red Star

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Universal Pictures has picked up the rights to Christian Gossett's award-winning graphic novel "The Red Star" and has tapped "Night Watch" filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov to develop with an eye to direct the fantasy sci-fi tale.

"Red Star" is an epic war saga set in the latter days of the mythical U.R.R.S. (United Republics of the Red Star) - a reimagined Soviet Union - where a totalitarian state uses militarized sorcery and monolithic technology to overcome a smaller, less advanced neighbor. Over the course of several generations, the U.R.R.S. empire not only fought its neighbor, but also slaughtered millions of its own people by the order of a single man, their leader Imbohl - a powerful sorcerer whose insanity is driven by his quest for immortality. The Heroes of the Red Star discover the true nature of their nation's struggle and fight to liberate their people from Imbohl's dark legacy.

There are currently 15 issues and 4 collected trade paperbacks that make up "The Red Star" saga.

The studio is looking for to writers to adapt the project for the big screen.

Of note, "The Red Star" graphic novel series is not to be confused with DC comics character "Red Star" (a.k.a. Leonid Kovar) who is a Russian superhero and former member of the Teen Titans. Just in case you were getting them mixed up. --Shannon Nolley
