According to Variety, John Cusack is set to star in Dimension Films' bigscreen adaptation of the Stephen King short story "1408."
Adapted by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski ("The People vs. Larry Flynt" writers), the film centers on a debunker of paranormal occurrences who encounters real terror when he checks into notorious Room 1408 at the Dolphin Hotel.
Directed by Mikael Hafstrom ("Derailed"), the movie will start filming this summer at a yet-to-be-determined location.
"This film is so much a one-man show," Hafstrom told Daily Variety. "It's quite a contained drama. It is a horror film if you want to put a label on it, but the way I see it, it's much more an inner-journey of this character."
"1408" originally appeared as a King audio book called "Blood and Smoke" and was subsequently included in King's 2002 short story collection "Everything's Eventual."
Dimension also recently announced that it has purchased the film rights to King's latest novel "Cell," which new horror fan favorite Eli Roth ("Hostel") will direct.
Until these adaptations are released, horror film fans will just have to hold out until May for another serious dose of King. The "Desperation"mini-series - directed by Mick Garris and staring Tom Skerritt, Steven Weber, Annabeth Gish, Ron Perlman and Henry Thomas, to name a few - is set to air on Thursday, May 18th on ABC. For a bit of trivia, Thomas also worked with Garris on the "Chocolate" episode of "Masters of Horror." If you watch carefully, you'll spot Thomas reading a copy of "Desperation." It's a nice nod.
Cusack next stars in New Line's "Martian Child" with sister Joan Cusack and Amada Peet. Cusack also starred with Peet in the thriller "Identity" and with sister Joan in ... well... more films than I can count. (That's a good thing, people!) --Shannon Nolley
