Del Toro Takes On "The Wolf Man"

Del Toro

According to Variety, Universal Pictures has ordered up a remake of its horror classic "The Wolf Man," with Benicio Del Toro playing the title role.

Like the 1941 original that starred Lon Chaney Jr., new film will be set in Victorian England. Del Toro will play a man who returns from America to his ancestral homeland, gets bitten by a werewolf and begins a hairy moonlight existence.

Del Toro, who collects Wolf Man memorabilia, will be one of the producers. Universal holds the underlying rights to the character. No word on who will direct.

Writer Andrew Kevin Walker ("Seven" and "Sleepy Hollow") has begun working on the script. He has apparently already spent several months working on some "frightening new twists to a familiar tale, adding several characters and plot points that take advantage of cutting-edge visual effects technology." Er... I hope so. The film won't do so well if it sticks with effects from 1941.

The producers and studio are hoping that "The Wolf Man" will shoot early in 2007 - after Del Toro completes "Guerrilla," the Che Guevara film being directed by Steven Soderbergh - and will get a summer 2008 release.

Yet another remake. Hooray. Let's just hope the werewolves look better than the ones in "Van Helsing." They should at least be of "Underworld" quality. Hmm. Do I see a pattern? I wonder if they'll get Kate Bekinsdale to co-star - she seems to bring the animal out in her leading men. --Shannon Nolley
