"Superman Returns" will literally jump out at audiences -- at least in Imax theaters, according to Variety.
Large-screen exhibitor Imax and Warner Brothers Studio announced this week that roughly 20 minutes of "Superman" will be converted into Imax 3-D, with the film becoming the first live-action feature to utilize Imax's conversion technology.
Director Bryan Singer is picking the three or four sequences to be converted. Singer is also designing a visual cue that will let audiences know when to put on and take off their Imax 3-D glasses.
Singer said the test scenes that have been converted "look, sound and feel absolutely amazing" and that the experience will "envelope audiences in this story, enabling them to feel the emotion, drama and suspense in a completely new and unique way."
With the growing popularity of television and internet downloads as the viewing mediums of choice (Entertainment Weekly named TV "king" last week), it's becoming crucial for studios to find new ways to lure audiences back in to the theaters. Imax and Warner Bros. are banking that viewers will believe that a 3-D "Superman" (at least 20 mins of it) will provide an "experience that can't be replicated anywhere else" and will ultimately deem it worthy of the price of admission.
Brandon Routh stars as the Caped One with Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor, Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane, James Marsden as Richard White and Parker Posey as Kitty Kowalski.
The film, which returns the Man of Steel to the big screen after more than two decades, will premiere simultaneously in conventional and Imax theaters on June 30th. --Shannon Nolley
