Touted as "the biggest experiment with interactivity and
additional content created expressly for DVD by a major studio," New
Line Home Entertainment is putting together an interactive "Thrill
Ride" edition of "Final
Destination 3," according to Variety.
Due in stores July 25th, the DVD will give viewers repeated opportunities to make "life-or-death choices" for its characters.
New Line's "Thrill Ride" edition marks the latest attempt by studios to boost DVD sales through enriched content. For some time now, studios have been churning out "special," "extended," "platinum" or "superfantastic-you-must-buy-this" editions of movies under the belief they will stimulate sales among viewers who have already seen the movie.
DVDs with alternate endings and interactive features are nothing
new. According to New Line, however, this DVD raises the stakes -
taking these features to a new level.
Director/writer Jim Wong wrote 25 additional script pages expressly for the DVD, requiring between $700,000 and $1 million in additional production costs. The film's original budget was just under $30 million.
The "Thrill Ride" edition gives viewers seven choices that pop up on-screen at 10-minute intervals, including "Should Wendy take another look?" and "Map" or "No Map." Also included on the two-disc set is your standard director's commentary and a behind-the-scenes footage. If you don't go for all the bells and whistles, the DVD also features the simple theatrical version of the film. --Shannon Nolley
