"Kong" Is King of DVD With $100 Million In First Week
According
to Red
Orbit, the DVD for "King
Kong" scooped up $100 million in revenues and broke a
record for Universal Studios' home video group.
Universal
Studios Home Entertainment announced that more than 6.5 million DVDs
were sold in
the first six days "Kong" was on retail shelves, making it the
best-selling DVD ever for Universal in its initial release.
The "Kong" DVD debut contrasts to the theater box office opening in December, when "Kong" earned $66 million at North American box offices in its first five days - short of the roughly $75 million Universal thought it might bring.
Despite the initial "low" numbers, the $207 million remake
generated a total $217 million at domestic box offices throughout its
entire run and another $329 internationally for a total $546 million.
It is the fourth-biggest movie release ever in Universal's history.
"King Kong" was directed by "Lord of the Rings"
Oscar winner Peter
Jackson and stars Naomi
Watts, Jack Black
and Adrien Brody.
I guess if you're going to remake a movie, this is the way to do it. I'd say that I hope that this won't encourage more remakes, but I don't think anything can stop that trend. -- Shannon Nolley
