There's some confusion brewing about the upcoming release of the "Stargate-SG1" DVD collection. According to the SciFi Channel, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the show by releasing the first eight seasons in a "special DVD collection" due June 13.
The press release reads: "The Stargate SG-1 DVD collection contains the complete episodes for all eight seasons, along with extra content including two featurettes, "The Directors' Series" and "Beyond the Gate." Stargate SG-1 seasons one through eight will each be available for a suggested retail price of $49.96."
If you're like me, the part that says "collection contains the complete episodes for all eight seasons" sounds like all 8 seasons will be released in one single collection for under $50. Too good to be true? Well, yes. The folks at TVShowsOnDVD.com sorted it out for us.
Just to make everything crystal clear, they confirmed with Sony that the studio is releasing the first 8 seasons as a "special collection" - not as a single collection. Each individual season will be packaged in a new slim cases and will (again, each) retail for $49.96.
To the dismay of those already in possession of the previous seasons in the larger cases who might want their DVD sets to be consistent, Season 9 (which just ended) and the upcoming Season 10 will reportedly also be packaged in the slim cases. The previous DVD releases were in the standard-size cases.
Now filming its 10th season, "Stargate-SG1" stars Ben Browder, Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge, Michael Shanks, Claudia Black and Beau Bridges. The upcoming season will also feature a return of former cast regular Richard Dean Anderson, who will reprise his role of General Jack O'Neill in several episodes of both "Stargate SG-1" and "Stargate Atlantis," including the historic 200th episode of "SG-1."
