SciFi and Stan Lee Want You - To Pick A Superhero

The nationwide casting call for the SciFi Channel's upcoming reality series "Who Wants To Be A Superhero?" is coming to a close. One contestant spot remains. To get audiences involved in the show before it even airs, SciFi has put it to the world-wide-web-slingers to choose the final contestant.

If you visit the show's website before midnight (EST) on Friday, May 12, 2006 you can vote for the 11th and final contestant for the series that is slated to premiere July 26, at 9:00 pm ET/PT.

As we've discussed before, the SciFi Channel is partnering with legendary comic-book creator Stan Lee for a six-episode reality series that will challenge a lucky few to create their very own superhero. The winner of this six-week competition will walk away with his or her superhero identity immortalized in a new comic-book created by Lee. The winning superhero will also be featured in one of the cable channel's original Saturday night movies. (Is that a reward or punishment?)

Three finalists are:

"Lemuria": Super Powers: Shoots laser-beams and fireballs; levitates; drains energy from people, animals and plants; hurls orbs of solar energy; Vulnerability: Darkness and the night; Fights for: the global balance of power; Catch Phrase: "Hello, Sunshine!" (Well that makes me not like her right there. Waaay too happy!)

"Diamond Girl": Super Powers: Hard as a diamond; survive heat up to 3,820 degrees Kelvin; super strength; diamond force shield; invisibility; Vulnerability: Can be cut by diamonds; Fights for: underdogs; Catch Phrase: "Where there's darkness, I will bring light." (I dunno... what's so bad about the dark? I generally prefer it.)

"Artemis": Super Powers: Goddess of the Hunt; speaks with animals; uses any animal's abilities; seductive, hypnotic gaze; change into a black panther; Vulnerability: Can't harm or endanger animals (that reminds me of The Tick - "here, eat this kitten!); Fights for: harmony between Nature and Man; Catch Phrase: "Let the hunt begin!" (I don't know about her either... she sounds kinda like a hippie.)

This might be a tough decision. No wonder SciFi didn't want to make the call. Oh wait, I almost forgot. It's all about publicity. Ah well. It might be good for a chuckle. If you take a look at the site, you know it's all in fun anyway.

Be sure to check out the audition videos of each hero-wannabe. As you might imagine, the finalist with the most votes will become a contestant on the show. -- Shannon Nolley
