Stiller and Carrey's "Used Guys" Gets Bumped

Jim CarreyAccording to The Hollywood Reporter, 20th Century Fox has halted preproduction on the big-budget, sci-fi comedy "Used Guys," staring Ben Stiller and Jim Carrey. Shooting was to have begun next month.

"Due to scheduling issues, production is being delayed on 'Used Guys' ... until sometime next year," the studio said. "The Jay Roach-directed film requires a long prep for its futuristic settings, and both actors have films scheduled for later in the year. All the parties remain committed to making the picture when time permits."

When time permits, huh? That doesn't sound good. Apparently, sources close to the project insist that the hefty $112 million-budgeted film is dead - at least in its current incarnation with Stiller and Carrey headlining.

"Guys" would have reunited the two comic titans for the first time since Stiller directed Carrey in 1996's "The Cable Guy." Maybe they just don't want to do another movie together with the word "Guy" in it. How about "Dude" or "Fella"? Would that work?

"Used Guys" is set on a future Earth run by women. Two obsolete "pleasure clones" head out on a desperate search for the fabled nirvana known as Mantopia. Hmmm. Stiller and Carrey as pleasure clones? That hurts my head.

The Hollywood Reporter also said that it is Stiller's involvement in another big-budgeted Fox project -- Shawn Levy's "Night at the Museum," which is currently filming -- that prevented the actor from being available for the "Guys" start date next month.

Fox had slated "Guys" for a June 15, 2007, release date. Instead, the studio will bump up the release of its "Fantastic Four" sequel starring Michael Chiklis, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans and Ioan Gruffudd. "Fantastic Four 2" had been set to premiere July 4, 2007.

Ah well. I guess the quest for Mantopia remains unfulfilled. Poor "Guys." -- Shannon Nolley
