A Closer Look At "The Science of Superman"

Superman ReturnsObviously set to coincide with the premiere of the upcoming release of "Superman Returns" on Wednesday, June 28th, National Geographic will soon be running a special called "The Science of Superman," according to SuperHeroHype.

The special claims that it will put "the superpowers to the test, revealing what's plausible based on the earth-bound laws of physics, biology and astronomy, and what's pure science fiction."

In addition to "expert scientific analysis," the special will include behind-the-scenes peeks from "Superman Returns" with director Bryan Singer, Brandon Routh (the new Superman), "Smallville" creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, and comic book writer Mark Waid.

The program is also said to examine how the character's superpowers are being reborn in laboratories around the world - from x-ray vision at airport security checks, to bulletproof vests five times stronger than steel, to the development of "super-mice" at the University of Pennsylvania. Super-mice? That sounds like a spin-off to me - or at least a cross between a "Mighty Mouse" and a "Pinky & The Brain"episode.

While SuperHeroHype says that the show will air on Thursday, June 29th at 9 p.m. ET/PT, the current schedule posted online for the National Geographic Channel lists it premiering on Saturday, July 1st at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Perhaps things got screwed up since the opening date of "Superman Returns" was moved up to allow for a longer holiday box office weekend. I recommend checking your local TV guide or setting your TiVo to be on the safe side. -- Shannon Nolley
