Eve Online (Re)Review

The good folks over at MMORPG.COM have decided to re-review several of the major massively multiplayer online games, revisting their original reviews and updating them to reflect the current state of these games. The first game on the docket is the #1 rated Eve Online (according to the their poll). This is one of the few science fiction based games available today, with the market largely dominated by sword & sorcery games.

The review details each facet of the game. It has been updated to reflect the new content that has been added during the game's long (for a MMO) history, including the Exodus, Cold War and Red Moon Rising expansions. The reviewer gives it an overall value score of 8 out of 10, saying 'In the end, if you looking for a space opera where you can be a hero or the ensign in a red shirt, then EVE definitely delivers'. They also noted that a casual gamer would not be completely overshadowed by the uber gamer, which is a criteria that I have for all of my future game purchases. For me, this alleviated my main concern about joining an established game; namely, can I, as a newbie, enter the mature game economy and still thrive? It looks like a latecomer can enjoy this game. The full content of the review can be found here.

The community looks to be vibrant and the company is actively supporting the game. In fact, they have an affiliated collectable card game that is was announced in July. I've always been a fan of CCG's (Magic: The Gathering anyone?), so, to me, this is a sign of a game that is very much alive and well. If you have some time in your gaming schedule, this is a title to explore.

There is a free 14 day trial available through various outlets. In addition, MMORPG is currently running a contest to win a free 60 day account to Eve Online - all you have to do is register for a free MMORPG account to qualify. After the free period (if you win), the game is $14.95 per month, which is pretty common for a MMO.
