"SG-1" Cancellation Information
Since I have seen a few comments posted on the recent announcement that "Stargate SG-1" will be cancelled at the end of this season, I thought I would try to gather the relevant information here to help sift fact from rumors.
First off, "Stargate SG-1" will definately not be renewed by the SciFi Channel at the end of the current season. The official announcement notes the 'Guinness World Record-setting accomplishment' of the series ten years and 215 episodes. It also notes that "Stargate: Atlantis" has been renewed for its fourth season.
Looking a little deeper, I found this article, where it is stated that the network's decision to cancel the show '...was based more on a feeling that the series had run its course than on ratings'. The viewership of the show has remained fairly steady at approximately 2 million viewers.
However, it looks like all hope is not lost. Gateworld is reporting that the show's producers are actively looking for a new network to air new installments of the show. The article also notes that there could be a movie or a miniseries in the works.
Finally, there is a disussion running over at Slashdot on this topic. Be prepared to sift through a large amount of inane comments if you head over there. However, some of the posters have well thought out posts - check out the 'So Long and Thanks' thread for good points.
I am hoping for the best; however, the only shows that I can think of that successfully switched networks are "Buffy: The Vampire Slayer" (WB to UPN) and, well, "Stargate" (which aired for five seasons on Showtime before moving to the SciFi Channel). Most of these renewal campaigns seem to fail, even with the support of the actors (see "Serenity"). The movie or miniseries route seems most likely. I wish everyone involved the best of luck!
NOOOO!! JUST when I really got into the show. Sure, it's late in the game (like 9 seasons late) but I was never a huge fan of Anderson in the lead. I could never get over his MacGyver thing. I was always waiting for him to "defuse" a situation with a paper clip, pen, rubber band, tweezer, nasal spray and turkey baster (and a Mastercard of course).
Once Ben Bowder joined, though, I was hooked. Yes. I miss my Farscape.
Guh. Now Bowder and Claudia Black have to find ANOTHER show to star on together. Sigh.
