'Rex Mundi' Adaptation to Star Johnny Depp
Superhero Hype is reporting that Johnny Depp has signed on to play the lead character in an adaption of the comic book miniseries, 'Rex Mundi'. Depp's production company, Infinitum Nihil, will produce the feature.
From the official Rex Mundi website, Rex Mundi is an original comic book miniseries from Dark Horse Comics, set in a Paris where magic is real and the Catholic Church never lost its grip on power.
Tyically, I wouldn't take much interest in an announcement like this. However, several things piqued my interest here. First, Depp evidently reads comics. Second, Jim Uhls ('Fight Club') is writing the script. And, finally, I get notes from Arvid Nelson, the creator of 'Rex Mundi' every month, since I am on his mailing list as a fan!
I am a reader of this comic. It has great atmosphere. The mystery of the Church, coupled with hints of magic are very compelling. Think of 'Rex Mundi' as a murder mystery that leads to a conspiracy, and that conspiracy has biblical roots. And, all of this is set in a world that an alternate history of our own, where the Catholic Church is very, very powerful and the Inquisition is active. From the website again, "The Church employs a permanent Inquisition, which serves two purposes. First, it is a spiritual police force, dedicated to exterminating heresies, witches, devil worshippers, Jews, Muslims… all those perceived to oppose the Church"
To me, this sounds like it could be a fantastic movie. Pick up one of the 'Rex Mundi' trades to sample the story; this will bear following throughout production.
Sounds good to me. I'll see anything Depp stars in. He's a very talented actor that has plenty of good movies left in him.
