'SciFi Weekly' Fall Preview, Part I

I might be a little behind in my email, but I found this article by SciFi Weekly in my inbox yesterday evening. The article, written by Kathie Huddleston, is a very solid summary of the cancelled, returning and new shows for this fall season. It's worth reading. However, there are a few areas where Ms. Huddleston (KH, for the rest of this post) is ill-informed, so that is where I come in.

How is she ill-informed? Because, she actually had the nerve to say, ...we lost some wonderful shows last year (Threshold, Invasion)...' Threshold was wonderful?!? Ahhh!!!! I think my thoughts on the shortcomings of that show are well documented. So, keep that viewpoint in mind when your read her article.

After the introduction, the main part of the article is very good, previewing the four brand new SciFi genre shows: 'Day Break', 'Heroes', 'Jericho', and 'SCI FI Investigates'. As stated in another post, I have high expectations for 'Heroes' and, after reading the preview, I think 'Day Break' could be very good. It stars Taye Diggs as a man stuck in a 'Groundhog Day'-type scenario, reliving the same day over and over. However, one detail hooked me. He keeps his memories - and all of the injuries and bruises that he acquires in previous days. That could make for an interesting season.

I don't have high expectations for 'Jericho' or 'SCI FI Investigates'. 'Jericho' has not captured my imagination to date, although I did like Skeet Ulrich's work in the short-lived series 'Miracles'. 'SCI FI Investigates' will live or die on the drawing power of Survivor veteran Rob Mariano, which, to be truthful, is almost enough for me to TiVo this during its short, six episode run.

To wrap up the article, KH does a very good job of previewing the animated SciFi offerings for this fall. Unfortunately, since this is from the printed magazine, some of the shows have already started airing. Thus is the price of being too cheap to buy a copy on the newsstand!

The main items to note in this list are the 'Hellboy: Sword of Storms' (who doesn't love Hellboy?) animated movie, premiering October 28th and 'Ultimate Avengers 2' on October 21st. This is the animated sequel to the first Ultimate Avengers, which brings in a very cool Black Panther to help the Avengers deal with an alien invasion. The article is a bit outdated on this information.

I am also intrigued by the 'Legion of Superheroes', premiering on the CW on September 23rd. I was a huge fan of this book when I was young. Superboy, Saturn Girl, Lightning Lad, Cosmic Boy in the 31st century! Mon-el and Wildfire! If this is done correctly, it should put 'Teen Titans' to shame, and hopefully approach a 'Justice League Unlimited' level of quality (which is really, really good, if you have not seen it). KH was probably too young to have read these books (even though there is a still a version in publication), but, that's forgiveable.

SciFi Weekly has promised Part II of this article, detailing returning shows, midseason replacements, movies and miniseries by next week. Don't worry - I'll be keeping them honest.
