'Harry Potter' Mystery Revealed

'Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince' left several mysteries open. One of the most discussed was the identity of the wizard left the note in the locket that was discovered by Harry and Dumbledore near the end of the novel.

The text of the note was:

"To the Dark Lord, I know I will be dead long before you read this but I want you to know that it was I who discovered your secret. I have stolen the real Horcrux and intend to destroy it as soon as I can. I face death in the hope that when you meet your match, you will be mortal once more. R.A.B." ('Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince', pg. 609/569)

This has sparked much discussion in the Harry Potter community and more than a few essays on the identity of R.A.B. This speculation can now end!

According to this report, the identity of R.A.B was revealed to Isabel Nunes, who is responsible for the translation of the Portuguese version of the Harry Potter series. She evidently asked J.K Rowling about the sex of the character, who provided the R.A.B's sex and full name. Without further ado, the name is:

Regulus Arcturus Black.

Except for the revelation of Arcturus as the middle name, this news will not shock the most devout of the Harry Potter faithful. The conventional wisdom pointed to Sirius Black's younger brother as the identity of R.A.B. However, it is interesting that the name Arcturus appeared as the name of one of Sirius and Regulus' ancestors in a hand-drawn sketch of the Black family tree made by J.K. Rowling herself (in January 2006). The lady really knows how to plot out the details of a story.

Now, the remaining question is 'Was he able to destroy the locket horcrux?' We only have a short nine months (or so) to wait.

i can't believe we have to wait unitl july 07 for the next movie.

I already knew it was him.I didn't know for sure.At least noe we know his full name.
I can't wait for book 7!!

Actually, we already know that Regulus did not destroy the locket. It was found, but not recognized, as the group was cleaning out the cupboards in the drawing room in Order of the Pheonix. It can probably now be found in Kreacher's den.

I was wondering if the locket found in the Order hideout was the horcrux...but, that is not confirmed yet. Still, it's a very logical guess.

Need book 7 - Need book 7 - Need book 7 - Need book 7.

I already knew it was Regulus Black for sure except that i used to refer him as Regulus A. Black. I just can't wait for the 7th book to come.Aah!

Yeah, I also remember the locket being found. I was reading a fan fiction where they mentioned it like such and that they Malfoys would be a logical guess as to who now might have it since Kreacher spent time with them. I'm very interested to see what happens with the Horocruxes though.

i thought so.. all the evidence pointed to him and voldemort obviously killed him for finding out about him. poor regulus.. guess he wasnt as bad as sirius thought

It's not "Arcturus", but "Arthur".

Actually, we don't know for certain whether or not he destroyed the locket (In reference to one of the posts at the top). All we know is that there is a locket in Sirius' house. They might not have recognised the S because, like Marvolo's ring, when the curse was lifted and the soul shattered, it could have cracked where the S was, making it not too clear to see.

I figured it was Regulus right after I read the book when it came out. It took a while to sink in, but maybe that's why JKR killed off Sirius. Maybe he found the locket, saw Slytherin's mark (even if it was old and dirty and possibly in bad condition IF Regulus broke it), figured his brother would've had something to do with it and reslised he was good in the end.

But, realise how, thoughout Book 6 and part of 5, whenever someone talked about Regulus' death, they always say "as far as I know". Meaning that their source was not a direct one. Then remember when Dumbledore told Draco that he could hide him beyond his imagination? I think Dumbledore did just that with Regulus. I don't think he's dead. And I think Sirius may have possibly found that out. Which is why he got killed off *tear*

This is not evidence that RAB is Regulus.
Where does it mention the validity of this?
Unless JKR confirms it, this means an open ended question. Did JKR confirm it?

I think JKR is fantastic and I can't wait for the 7th book to release.I would like to advise her not to kill Harry as his end would be the end of all the "Harry potter fans"

i am forced to believe that regulus is R.A.B. although as much as i dont want to know i am craving the information. Harry might have just dicarded the locket found in the house because he did not see the locket until the next book, and probably did not pay much attention to it at the time. he probably realized he could not open it and threw it in a pile of things to throw away. i do believe it is a destroyed horcrux because harry probably would have felt his scar hurt or would have been overcome with a curse if he touched it otherwise.

man regulus is R.A.B and its on all kinds of sites.. go to google and put who is RAB? and it will tell u...

-- Posted by: jimmy at May 25, 2007 11:30 PM

i dont think that dumbledore would hide regulus(in reference to one of the above posts)from the order. he would have let regulus give company to sirius at no.12 grimmauld place.and has ne1 thought of regulus being an unregistered animagus? he could be biding his time as voldemort had done.
RAB is definately a member of the black could even be tonks' mother andromeda.she might have used her middle name as her first name.i know that she got married, but still...
in jkr's world, ne thing is possible!
i just cant wait 4 the 7th book 2 come out!!!

Hey i thot regulus's middle name was Alphard as Sirius's is that... dont know why i thot that... Alphard is Sirius's fav uncle... the locket cud actually be anywhere... remember that mundungus stole lots of stuff from grimmauld place... well the locket cud be one of the things he stole... or it cud be in kreacher's cupboard... JKR deffo rocks... cant wait for the book...

I think that Sirius was not actualy killed by Belatrix in the 5th book (it didn't say the curse/hex used)
So my theory is Sirius went undercover and used his brothers name
