I Love 'Heroes', But...

Heroes is great! It's on my must see list every week, holds a privileged spot in my TiVo Season Pass listing and is a show I am promoting to my friends. It has provided funny moments (thanks, Hiro!) and great cliffhangers each week. But, there is still something 'off' about the show - something that makes it an '8' or a '9', instead of a '10'.

The good people over at SF Signal have put together "5 (Spoliery) Things About Heroes That Annoy the Begeezus Out Of Me". And, they have hit on some of the reasons that the show still bothers me (just that little bit...). The list includes the incredibly nerdy looking glasses on the evil stepfather of the cheerleader, the fact that the cheerleader wears her outfit *everywhere* and Hiro's smart move of picking up the gun near the crime scene in the house of the psychic (among a few others).

To their list, I would add the fact that Mohinder is staying in his father's apartment and rebuilding the map, when *he knows that the bad guys have been there several times and knows who he is and that he is living there*. Does this guy have a death wish?

The conclusion is that these people lost their common sense when they gained their powers.

Or, the more realistic conclusion: the shows writers are good at concepts, but pretty average at dialogue and dramatic scene construction. However, the show is still successful and *good*. Just look at the show immediately following 'Heroes' - 'Studio 60'. Each week, 'Studio 60' is like a master class in show writing, scene construction and smart dialogue. And, it is bleeding the 'Heroes' viewership profusely - it is only holding 2/3 of 'Heroes's audience through the 10 o'clock hour.

Just goes to show that an interesting and fun concept beats flawless execution every time. And, so far, it is working for me!

I agree and have said many times that the show needs to step up it's writing. It lacks in that aspect, but the characters are so great, I'm glued every week!

As far as Hiro's move to pick up the gun in Isaac's apartment, there's a blog on nbc.com/Heroes in which he explains that in any video game the character picks up the weapon on the ground (I think he blogged it with more eloquance!). Which is not really a reasonable explanation, but it is satiating and makes Hiro that much cooler!

Hiro's blog rocks. I love some of the early posts...

'Must finish Final Fantasy'

That's awesome.
