Top Ten (er...Six) Current Sci-Fi Shows
The Nielson Galaxy Report provides a list of the top ten Sci-Fi shows on television each week. I found this particular list over at the SciFiWire. Without further ado, here is the list:
|      | Lost | 10.3 |
|      | Heroes |   8.1 |
|      | Jericho |   6.9 |
|      | Ghost Whisperer |   6.5 |
|      | Smallville |   2.9 |
|      | Supernatural |   2.2 |
Please note that this list only tracks the US Broadcast networks - that's why 'Battlestar Galactica', 'Doctor Who' and 'Torchwood' are not included. If anyone can give me a good site to get UK numbers, it would be much appreciated.
So, what to make of this list? The first thing that came to mind is that there are only six shows on the major US networks that qualify as Sci-Fi. 'Day Break' will be added to the list in a week, but it will simply replace 'Lost', as it will run in the same time slot. I have to conclude that there is a dearth of Sci-Fi programming on the major networks.
I do see good news in this report, however. 'Lost' is still strong in the ratings, and the two newest Sci-Fi offerings ('Heroes' and 'Jericho') both have solidified themselves in their respective TV lineups. Both have been extended throughout the remainder of the season. And, although I do not speak of 'Ghost Whisperer' (although pictures of Jennifer Love Hewitt are always nice) or 'Smallville' (don't ask - it's dead to me), 'Supernatural' is off to another strong season.
The thought here is that these strong performances will bring more Sci-Fi genre shows to the networks. I believe if some of the SciFi Channel's winter offerings ('Dresden Effect', 'Painkiller Jane') gain followings, as 'Eureka' did, the networks will really start to take this genre seriously.
It's funny. I remember that Smallville and The OC came out around the same time essentially targeting the same audience of high school kids. Yet, it seems like Smallville has matured with its audience where as The OC seems to be attempting to reposition itself at high schoolers. Obviously, from a ratings standpoint, we see who did the better job of keeping viewers. I was always more of a Smallville fan myself. Great show. Maybe it's just the comic book fan in me.
I definitely agree about there needing to be more Sci-fi, though. Why did they cancel Firefly!?
