Sci-Fi Fodder

The Future of "Day Break"

ABC is thinking ahead this year. They have announced that "Lost" will be moving to 10:00 PM (EST) when it returns in February to avoid the phenomenon known as "American Idol". (AI's success may be a science fiction story in itself, eh?)

But, this post is not to talk about "Lost", nor "American Idol". This post is going to talk about poor Taye Diggs and his show, "Day Break", which no longer has a timeslot. The buzz was that "Day Break" would switch to 10:00 PM when "Lost" returned - which is clearly not the case now. ABC will be scheduling the comedies "Knights of Prosperity" and "In Case of Emergency" in the 9:00 PM hour as the "Lost" lead-ins, wiping out its current slot. "Day Break" is a bit dark for the 8:00 PM hour, and that slot is intended for "George Lopez" and "According to Jim", so the Wednesday night is completely taken.

Variety says that "Day Break" "...will either be yanked after its Dec. 27 broadcast or moved to another night. No word on what will happen with the remaining five episodes of the skein..." In addition, ABC still has six unaired episodes (each) of "The Nine" and "Six Degrees," as well as midseason replacements "October Road," "Traveler" and "Masters of Sci-Fi." "Traveler", by the way, looks especially interesting - check it out here (and, yeah, its Sci-Fi in a conspiratorial, secret plot way).

So, what's the verdict? Will "Day Break" make it to 2007?

It's not looking good. "Day Break" is drawing less than half of the "Lost" viewership and the programs immediately before ("Show Me The Money") and after ("Primetime") are drawing about 1.5 times its viewership. Thus, even though I really like the show, I have to predict that "Day Break" will end on December 27th.

Sorry to have to tell you this, seeing as you're already a journalist of sorts, but "it's" means "it is" and "its" is the possessive of it. Seems you had them entirely backward in that post.

It's a shame Day Break is going... people didn't give it a chance because of its premise is my theory. And it's a huge shame, because the premise works so well!
