A "Firefly" Online Game
Wired Magazine is reporting that "Firefly" will become an massively multiplayer online game (MMO). This could be good news - after all, I loved "Firefly" and "Serenity" (who didn't?). Even Wired notes that "...what made the show special was the wry, often self-deprecating humor of its characters, from the captain with the checkered past to the unwittingly sexy engineer, the dull hunk of a mercenary with a girl's name, and the mysterious young woman passenger with special gifts." Testify, brothers!
However, I am a little shaky on the platform. Multiverse is the creator of a free MMO-creation platform, which is designed to create "...a universal browser that lets users access any world built on the Multiverse platform using the same client software." It's an interesting concept. Presumably, this concept will allow a game designed to focus exclusively on content - which, as a byproduct, would provide an entry point to MMO development for low budget shops. So, I could become a MMO developer, using this platform! (Hello, sweet retirement!)
The Multiverse developers have an excellent pedigree, with Netscape on the founder's resumes. However, to temper the enthusiasm, I do not know of any currently successful game using the platform. Kaneva, which has a similar platform idea, hasn't exactly caught fire. So, they have much work to do.
Luckily, the Multiverse team and Fox have stated that they will hire an established game developer to adapt "Firefly" to the Multiverse platform. There is an abundance of material from the "Firefly" universe (yea...I should just say 'verse) and an experienced developer should be able to make this into a compelling product.
The Multiverse team is targeting a release date for the "Firefly" MMO in 2008.
